Maureen Isaacson Reviews Hani: A life too short by Janet Smith and Beauregard Tromp

October 13th, 2009 by Jani

Hani: A life too shortVerdict: carrot

This review of Hani: A life too short also includes notes from an interview that Isaacson conducted with the authors, who are her Independent Newspaper Group colleagues. (Smith and Tromp work at The Star.)

The reviewer is unstinting in her praise of their efforts, and her piece doubles as a good introduction to the book:

This first biography of Chris Hani provides a remarkably full portrait of the uncompromising people’s hero, “who acted like a leader when in the trenches and when he was a leader acted like he was in the trenches. He was everything for everybody all of the time.”

The authors of Hani; A Life too Short, journalists Janet Smith and Beauregard Tromp, say: “In our interviews, there was a universal sense that Hani was very popular, but he gave a sense of purpose to the people in the camp. He used his enormous power to get people to focus on the endgame - liberating South Africa.”

Smith and Tromp talk together or are in agreement in this interview, in the same way they worked together, searching for his feet of clay - to present a portrait “that was as human as possible”.
